Memorial For Bean

Friday, September 3, 2010 | | Posted by Cole's Peace

Last Sunday a few hundred Green Parrot aficionados turned out to pay their respects to Jim Bean. Jim was the beloved owner of The Parrot who passed away suddenly. Bean bought The Green Parrot Bar more than 25 years ago. He had a brilliant business plan, “Don’t change a thing”. Key West is a better place because of Jim Bean and The Green Parrot. Thanks Bean.

The Most Beautiful Woman in the World

I’m a very lucky man. I happen to be married to one of the best. She puts up with all my hair- brained shenanigans. She’s the mother of my 2 beautiful children. I count my blessings.

This is my first attempt to blog from my iPhone. I’m a Luddite with shakey fat fingers. Let’s see if this works.

The Studio’s of Key West are producing the 4th annual edition of “One Nights Stand” this evening. We are feeding the performers. This is a highly anticipated, very cool Key West event. Sells out every year. You need to check it out. These folks know great food.

It’s Lobster Mini Season

Wednesday, July 28, 2010 | | Posted by Cole's Peace

I’m happy to report that it’s Florida Lobster Mini Season. Happy for a couple of reasons. The first is to report that our waters off the Florida Keys are pristine. Visibility is crystal clear and the bounty is plentiful. The second reason is Key West is busy with all the divers who come down every year for this event. We are grateful that the ecological disaster of our lifetime has missed us. Come on down, the waters are spectacular and so is the fishing. Pick up some sandwiches before you head out.

The Mechanical Cavalry Has Arrived

We have been struggling mightily at Cole’s Peace. Our steadfast spiral mixer threw a bearing last week and we’ve been in a real fix. You can’t make great artisan bread without a spiral mixer. Lucky for us were able to mix our Cuban bread over at Goldman’s Deli. Thanks Mark, for your generous help. Key West would be lost without it’s Cuban Bread. Our artisan breads have had to go on hiatus for the past few bakes but starting today we are BACK. Thanks to all for their understanding and thanks to are entire staff for making the best of a bad situation.

Panera Bread Meets Cole’s Peace

Sunday, July 4, 2010 | | Posted by Cole's Peace

Panera Bread Co was here for a big meeting at Beachside and bought about 30 loaves of bread! Kelly Cook is on the left and Bruce is on the right. Pick up time was 7am. They bought cuban, french sourdough and mango. Here is a note they left us:

Thank you,

On behalf of all of us at Panera Bread, THANK YOU. It was a real pleasure to get to see and experience your bakery first hand last week. Bruce and I appreciated the quick tour and our team members really enjoyed the breads. Hands down, the Mango bread was the favorite. It is always great to see others who have a passion for baking and deliver such great products.

Wishing you continued success in the future and hope to see you again.

Key Lime Pie Face-Off

Friday, June 18, 2010 | | Posted by Cole's Peace

I got invited to participate in a Travel Channels Food Wars taping. The show was in town to film a Key Lime Pie face off between Blue Heaven and The Blond Giraffe. They needed a talking head who knew something about Key West and Key Lime Pie. I was more than happy to oblige. When asked who makes the best Key Lime Pie on the island I said that a gentleman Key Wester would say that it was the one currently being consumed. When pressed further I said that the best Key Lime Pie on the island is made by my wife Cathy. I am not a foolish man. Pictured are Richard Hatch, owner of Blue Heaven, Erica Sardarian, field producer for The Travel Channel and yours truly, noted Key West Food Historian.

With all of the problems in the world, this is still the greatest place in the greatest country. We’re all lucky to be here.
